ELA - ALL CLASSES - THE LIGHTNING THIEF

December 13, 2011

Dear 6th Grade Families,

Our next 6th grade literature book group will be, Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Book One) The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

We are requesting that all students read the book, for pleasure, during the Winter Break. Upon our return, we will re-read the book again, dissecting chapters, engaging in word study activities, comprehension checks and connected, varied assignments across all curricular area.

Many of the students informed us that they had a copy of the book, so we ordered copies for the students who informed us that they did not have a copy of the book.

These books are the property of Larchmont Charter School and must be returned in good, usable condition; with NO WRITING in the book, as well as please refrain from DOG-EARRING the pages.

We know that many of our families have activities, trips and camps planned during the break, however, our goal as life-long learners, is to engage our students in the process and love of reading. The Lightning Thief ties nicely into our theme of Community and meets many of the standards covered in 6th grade academic curriculum.

For many of our students, pacing will be the key to success as the book has 22 chapters and is 375 pages long. We suggest reading two chapters a day, which is about 20 pages a day, with the overall goal of completion being 11 days.

READING IS FUNDAMENTAL and together, we can support our students as they dive into varied forms of literature.

Best Regards,

The 6th Grade Team
